Discord Spotlight: Jeffrey Chiao

Jeffrey Chiao, AKA: Klonoa is a mod for the AVARIA Discord and a new game developer.

We asked him some questions below, check it out!

1. How did you find out about AVARIAvs?

I found AVARIAvs through MAGFest! I went and tried out the game with a friend at its booth back in 2017, and decided to keep myself up to date on how the game was going! I still remember feeling sweat from my hands in my first match back at MAGFest.

2. How long have you been a mod of the Discord?

I’ve been a mod on the discord for about a few months now! I can’t remember off the top of my head, haha. I think maybe around the time senior year was starting for me was when conversations within the avarian chat were brewing about needing moderators, and I decided I could give that a go because I’ve been busy to the point that I wasn’t able to test out the game or give immediate feedback.

3. What are you working on currently?

I am currently working on the just recently announced rhythm-adventure game, UNBEATABLE! I’m the level designer and project manager at D-Cell Games, the development team behind this exciting project. UNBEATABLE’s focus constantly shifts between fun rhythm battles and deliberate moments of quiet time where the players get to learn more about the world, and by extension, the main character, Beat. We’re coming to MAGFest’s Indie Video Game Showcase next year (2019) with a demo of the game! Please check it out!

4. What are your favorite games to play casually?

I like to play all sorts of games! My main go-to game is Final Fantasy XIV, which is (in my opinion) my favorite game in the whole series. It’s also the most expensive to play, haha! I’ve lately been enjoying other games like Groove Coaster and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. My most favorite games of all time are Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, Kingdom Hearts II, and OneShot!

5. What would be a dream game project?

I have a huge list of dream projects, some that are ridiculously large in scope, haha. I was working a little on one such idea, an Action-RPG about a dragon boy who can wield a magical GameBoy-like console and can wield attacks based off of the game inserted in said console. We recently decided to push the project back in favor of something else but I swear I’ll make this game a reality!
